In 1880, Sister Cecilla Carol, RSM and three companions traveled from the Motherhouse in Savannah, Georgia, to Atlanta, to minister to the sick. With what amounted to 50 cents, the Sisters opened The Atlanta Hospital, the first medical facility in the city. An article in the May 2, 1880, issue of The Atlanta Journal Constitution eloquently expressed the city’s response to the much needed new hospital:
“Atlanta has a new hospital at last. It is a permanent institution which will grow in importance and usefulness as the city’s needs increase. The new institution is called the Atlanta Hospital and is controlled by the Sisters of Mercy whose beautiful ministrations to the afflicted are known by all.”
