Mediastinal Mass Excision
Cancerous tumors in the compartment surrounding the heart are classified as mediastinal masses and may include thymomas, germ cell tumors, lymphomas, thyroid tissue, and parathyroid lesions. Mediastinal masses have a high frequency of malignancy.
Treament of mediastinal masses range from radiation therapy to surgical removal, or excision. Traditional mediastinal mass excision involves opening the chest and results in a large scar and a lengthy recovery time. With the advent of minimally-invasive robotic surgery, however, a new approach to mediastinal mass excision became available resulting in less trauma, less pain and faster recovery.
