Volunteering at Saint Joseph's
Auxiliary volunteers donate their time for the benefit of patients, families and staff at Saint Joseph’s. Volunteer services are provided throughout the hospital campus by Auxiliary members, who are distinguished by their blue uniforms.
After attending a thorough hospital orientation, volunteers are trained in a variety of services. After selecting the service of their choice, they are given additional training and a written job description. Volunteers generally work a 3-4 hour shift once per week, but other arrangements can be made to accommodate volunteers who have less time to give. Volunteers are needed Monday - Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Volunteers who choose a patient/family related service might be found:
- Visiting a patient.
- Escorting an incoming patient from admissions.
- Transporting a patient to radiology or to the main entrance to go home.
Many volunteers like to work directly with patients and families. Some volunteers never see this side of the hospital but instead:
- Work in the Gift Shoppe or Thrift Shop.
- Help out in the library.
- Perform computer duties.
- Provide administrative support for a variety of departments.
Volunteers also:
- Deliver patient mail and flowers.
- Provide information at the front desk.
- Inform families of surgical progress.
- Help patients and visitors find their way in the doctors’ buildings... and much more.
Volunteen program
Volunteen opportunities are available each summer during the months of June and July. Teen applicants must be 14 years old by June 1. Saint Joseph’s accepts applications beginning in January. Deadline to complete and return application is March 15. No applications will be accepted after this date. We do advise not waiting until the last day to turn everything in as we do fill up and we cannot guarantee placement. Attending orientation is a requirement and takes place during the first week of June. Volunteens usually work 1-2 days per week for a minimum of four hours per shift. A uniform is required and can be purchased through volunteer services.
