Prevention and Screening

Heart disease and stroke – the principal components of cardiovascular disease – are the first and third leading causes of death in the United States.  The goal of the Heart & Vascular Institute’s prevention and screening program is to educate people about controllable risk factors and help them prevent cardiovascular disease as much as possible.

We all have uncontrollable risk factors for cardiovascular disease  including gender (hormones), race, family history and age. 

Controllable risk factors are those habits or behaviors that we can change and reduce the chances of heart disease.  These include abnormal cholesterol readings, high blood pressure, overweight or obesity, sedentary lifestyle, smoking and alcohol consumption.

The Heart & Vascular Institute offers free cardiovascular screenings throughout the year on the Saint Joseph’s Hospital campus as well as at various business and community locations.  The program also includes nutrition counseling services, stress management classes and diabetes counseling and support groups.
