Signs and Symptoms of a swallowing disorder

  • Coughing during or right after eating or drinking
  • A feeling of food or liquid going down “the wrong pipe”
  • A gurgling, “wet” sounding voice during or after eating or drinking
  • Food or liquid, including saliva, leaking from the mouth (“drooling”)
  • Extra time and effort required to chew and swallow.
  • Sensation of things “stuck” within the throat or the chest during or after eating
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Food or liquid coming out of the nose while eating
  • Weight loss or dehydration
