Saint Joseph’s Hospital announced the launch of its Women’s Health Initiative with the Heart Center for Women scheduled to begin on the hospital’s Sandy Spring campus in late May, early June. Gina Lundberg, MD, a cardiologist specializing in women’s cardiovascular care, has been named the Center’s director.
“Women’s cardiovascular risks, symptoms and treatments are different than those for men,” says Dr. Lundberg. “We’re not ‘little men’ and we must be sure that we and our physicians are educated about the subtleties of cardiovascular disease.”
The Saint Joseph’s Heart Center for Women has multiple initiatives, including:
- Screening and educating women about their risk factors for cardiovascular disease through personal assessments
- Screening and educating the community through events and programs, such as Woman to Woman Conference with the American Heart Association
- Continuing education (CME) for physicians who care for females offering the latest research and guidelines for women’s cardiovascular care
- Research through the Saint Joseph’s Research Institute offering women clinical trials for heart disease areas.
Saint Joseph’s is hosting its first CME program in May for women’s primary care physicians including ob-gyns, internists, endocrinologists, among others. The CME will feature nationally-recognized speakers as well as Saint Joseph’s cardiologists.
Dr. Lundberg was recently named by Governor Sonny Perdue to Georgia’s Advisory Board of Women’s Health, an initiative under the direction of the Department of Community Health (DCH).
“With heart disease the number one cause of death for women, we are very excited to offer these programs and to move forward with efforts targeted specifically to women,” says Marti Taylor, president of Saint Joseph’s Heart and Vascular Institute.
